Architectural Photorealistic Render in Lumion

Updated: Sep 24, 2020

In this blog, there will be a set of Lumion settings and techniques below to impress your client, your classmate, or your college professor. Lumion is very convenient for those who want quality rendering in just a short time by just adjusting specific elements and settings compared to other software.

The problem is that not all architects can afford to render their work because some of them are too old and do not have the knowledge with what is the new software that could improve their visualizations. Also, it sometimes requires a powerful computer system and it is expensive to have both the computer and the software cost.

Who will benefit from this blog:

  • Aspiring Architect Students

  • Architects

  • Interior and Exterior Designers

  • and Anyone who wants to do 3D animation and visualization of a structure

For people that are blessed with knowledge with what is in the trend in the architectural visualization world and acquired a powerful system here are the tips and techniques. But before anything else these Lumion can be downloaded in their site and while at it check the system requirements for Lumion 9 and older version.

According to Nuttakit Chaiyamanee, one must have the knowledge to have at least basic knowledge of these apps, should be in intermediate knowledge in Lumion, and a Computer that has GPU PassMark should not be lower at least 2000 points.

Requirements in 3D Format of the Model:

  • Autodesk RealDWG: *.dxf

  • Autodesk RealDWG: *.dwg

  • COLLADA file: *.dae

  • FBX file: *.fbx

  • Max file: *.max

  • 3ds file: *.3ds

  • Obj file: *.obj

  • SketchUp file: *.skp

Just use the right material for the object and adjust the texture of how it would look like if it is rendered.

Let's Start with the Settings under the camera/ rendering section of Lumion:

First of all just click on the "Custom Style" button and choose the photorealistic or the Overcast to make it dramatic and under it click the "FX" and add the 2 point-perspective to make the model's lines straight and not making it look weird.

Now that Photorealistic or the Overcast for dramatic effect has been selected in the Custom Style adjust the following settings under it.

Depth of Field: this can be found in the view or the window where the camera focuses. You can adjust the distance of the lens from the view.

Exposure: it is an adjustment of the lightness or the darkness of the desired view.

Value - disabled.

Sun (important): the settings in sun can manipulate the sun's height, heading, and brightness. It can also control the shadows in the model.

Birghtness - 1.4 to 2.0

Shadows: it is cast by different light sources in the model. It will affect how the shadows will look like in the model.

Sun Shadow Range - 1030M

Coloring - 1.6 - 2.0

Interior or Exterior - 0.9

Omni shadow - 4

Shadow Correction - 0

Sharpen: Just like the 2 point perspective setting this also affects how the lines and edges are in the render.

Value - 0.3 - 0.5

Analog Color Lab: it will apply the preset color values to your render and to adjust the overall vibe. In this case, you want to apply a cooler color value.

Style - 1.7

Amount - 0.2

Noise: This adds some roughness to the overall render. Do not add a lot of this or else the render looks incomplete, but a little bit can add to the realism.

Intensity - 0.1

Color - 0

Skylight: value affects how soft and detailed the shadows are in the renderings. This can make render much more realistic.

Color correction: allows adjusting different aspects of the colors within rendering. Some of the settings can adjust include color temperature, tint, brightness, and contrast.

Temperature - 0.2

Tint - 0

Brightness - 0.5

Contrast - 0.7

Voila! This is the result of the settings If this feels realistic enough then proceed with the rendering and choose the right resolution to render. It can also be saved in the 3 horizontal bars in the settings. You could also reach me by my contacts if you have any questions or want me to render your model.
